02 — Anesthetic Technique
General Anesthesia
Monitored anesthesia for major and complex surgery, with individualized dosing and support of vital functions throughout the operation.
About this technique
General anesthesia produces a controlled, reversible loss of consciousness so that surgery can be performed without awareness or pain. It is the appropriate technique for many major and complex procedures, and it is frequently combined with regional techniques or other measures as part of a multimodal plan.
Each anesthetic begins with a preanesthesia evaluation and is planned around the patient's medical history, current medications and the demands of the procedure. Induction, airway management and emergence are planned in advance; the airway, breathing and circulation are assessed and supported as needed throughout the operation.
Monitoring follows applicable ASA standards, including continual evaluation of oxygenation, ventilation, circulation and temperature, with temperature measurement when clinically indicated. After the procedure, recovery takes place under defined criteria, and discharge from the recovery area follows the facility's standards.
